Essential Climate Variables – key indicators of Earth's changing climate

Explore satellite maps and graphs showing the evolution of some of the most important climate indicators. Created by researchers contributing to the ESA Climate Change Initiative, these long-term records, reveal shifts, trends and changes across Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and terrestrial domains.

These data records are vital in supporting international efforts to address climate change, including those of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These data are increasingly being used to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC.

Below are some of the main climate indicators derived from satellites.
