Observing lakes from space

Stefan Simis explains why lakes are an important element of the climate system and his hopes for COP27

Lakes across the planet are showing signs of change in response to human-induced global warming. Future change threatens aquatic ecosystems and local economies that rely on them.

Dr Stefan Simis of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory explains how satellite observations and ESA’s Climate Change Initiative are creating long-term records for over 2,000 lakes worldwide to help understand current and future changes in these important water bodies.
