FRACCEO project kicks off
A joint project between Deltares, NERSC, TUDelft and TUMunich
On 18 September 2025, the FRACCEO project—Flood Risk Assessment in a Changing Climate for Cities using Earth Observation (EO)—officially launched with a virtual kick-off meeting. The project is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the Climate Space initiative and brings together Deltares (project lead), NERSC, TUDelft, and TUM as project partners.
The initiative aims to demonstrate the value of EO data and the CCI Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) in assessing climate-related flood risks. The project is structured around five work packages:
- WP1: Review of current knowledge, gaps, and user needs
- WP2: Development of methods to detect and model sea level and sea state extremes using EO data
- WP3: Validation of methods and uncertainty assessment
- WP4: Scientific roadmap and open-access data/code archiving
- WP5: Project management, outreach, and communication
Discussions during the meeting focused on the technical requirements to combine EO data with flood models, synthesising stakeholder engagement insights from related projects, and aligning deliverables with the upcoming IPCC Special Report on Cities.
