RECCAP2: Global land carbon budget and its attribution to regional drivers
New tender issued by the ESA Climate Office (Activity Number: 1000039196)
Space-based earth observation (EO) information has the potential to contribute to achieving the UNFCCC Paris Agreement mitigation and adaptation objectives in many ways, including feeding into the Global Stocktake process.
The ESA Climate Office has issued a new tender to investigate the requirements and research and development activities needed for the optimal use of satellite-based Essential Climate Variables to make a significant step forward in the attribution and quantification of the global land carbon sources and sinks to land use change, fire and harvest disturbances and recovery, as well as climate effects.
The project shall improve our scientific knowledge in monitoring the impacts of climate change and direct human land use activity on the behaviour of natural sources and sinks of GHGs (CO2, CH4, N2O) on the land, on how carbon fluxes are controlled by water availability and temperature, through combined analysis of surface energy and CO2 fluxes.
The project shall also:
- support country reporting and the National Determined Contribution process of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement Global Stocktake, and
- provide regular, timely and adequate updates for the UNFCCC Paris Agreement Global Stocktake by combining 'bottom up' regional greenhouse gas budgets - informed by EO-based Essential Climate Variables - with 'top down' inversions separating each approach the anthropogenic fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O and the natural flux in accordance with best available science.
This tender is issued via ESA-STAR as an open competition (tender action number: 1-12082 -Activity Number: 1000039196).
- Deadline for submission: 16 February 2024 at 13:00 CET
- This tender is open to organisations from the following ESA Member States: AT+BE+CA+CH+CZ+DE+DK+ES+FI+FR+GB+IE+IT+NL+NO+PT+SE
